Did You Know:

Growth spurts can start as early as 10 days after your baby’s birth.  Growth spurts usually are preceded by a sleepy, lethargic day and a big jump in appetite.  Growth spurts may happen again at 3, 6, and 12 weeks and again at 4 and 6 months.  If you begin to notice that your child is not as satisfied with the amount that you have been feeding her previously, then she may be beginning a growth spurt period.  If you are breastfeeding, you may want to add a feeding or two to satiate your baby’s appetite and to help increase milk production.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren:

Point-Reward Chart

by Ron Huxley, LMFT

Point-Reward Chart: A point-reward chart consists of a daily or weeklly calendar or some sheet of paper with a number of boxes to check off. These boxes or calendars are used to tabulate the number of times a desired or undesired behavior occurs. After the child has completed a specific number of desired behaviors or check marks, the parent gives the child a reward.

This tool allows children to observe their progress and understand how much is expected of them. Instead of check marks, you can buy some stickers and let thme place a "star" or "happy face" on each box. Young children are reinforced simply by the placement of checks or stickers in the boxes. Parents can increase ownership of the procedure by letting children check off or place their own sticker on the point-reward chart. To guarantee success, start off with low expectations and build up to more difficult tasks. For example, you might start off with the expectation that "toys will be put away 3 out of 7 days per week without being reminded by mom or dad (or grandparent)." Later you may want to up the ante by stating the "toys must be put away 5 out of 7 days per week." To determine what a child is capable of doing, use the baseline parenting tool. Don't forget to reward effort as well as end result. See the encouragement parenting tool for more information.
